Beyonce Matches Mariah
Eminem’s “Walk on Water” debuts at Number 6 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart dated December 2nd. Beyonce, as a featured artist, has surpassed Nicki Minaj and Whitney Houston for third most 10 tops. With that said, Beyonce is now tied with Mariah for third most top 10s on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. “Water” has flew up the R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Song Sales chart to number 1 with 64,000 downloads sold. According to Nielsen Music, “Water” also opens at Number 11 on R&B/Hip-Hop Streaming Songs (18.3 million U.S. streams) and 12 million in radio audience.
The success of this collaboration has given Beyonce her 27th top 10 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, shifting the order of women with the most top 10s on the list. As you can imagine this includes some of music history’s biggest female acts.
With 27 top 10s, Beyonce passes Whitney Houston and Nicki Minaj. Whitney’s collection of top 10s includes eight Number 1s between the years 1984 and 1999. Minaj however started collecting top 10s in 2010 and has four number 1s herself. Nicki’s most recent top 10 was alongside Migos and Cardi B. “Motorsport,” which debuted at Number 6 last month currently since in the number 7 spot.
As Beyonce claws her way past Nicki and Whitney to match Mariah’s 27 top 10s for third among all women in the chart’s history, she only trails Aretha Franklin with 52 and Janet Jackson with 30. Among all artists, Drake and James Brown are tied with the most at 57 each.
A Familiar Duo
Beyonce’s first visit to the top 10 was with her husband, Jay-Z. “03 Bonnie and Clyde” found its way to Number 5 back in 2002. Their follow up single, “Crazy in Love” also found it’s way to the top 10 in 2003. “Crazy” held the number 1 position for three weeks and became the first of Beyonce’s eight number ones. Beyonce’s most recent effort that found itself on top of the charts featured no other than the man himself, Jay-Z. The duos song “Drunk in Love” sat on top of the chart for one week in 2014.
As for Eminem, he is no stranger to the top 10 either. “Water” has become Em’s 10th top 10 hit and his first in over three years. His previous effort, “Guts Over Fear” featuring Sia debuted at Number 6. Eminem’s first trip to the top 10 was his cult classic, “Lose Yourself,” back in December of 2002. I think it’s safe to say that this won’t be the last for either.
