Travis Scott Bows atop Billboard with Second Largest Week
Travis Scott and his album Astroworld bow atop the Billboard 200 chart with 2018’s second-largest week for an album. This accomplishment earns the rapper his second number 1. Astroworld was released August 3rd via Cactus Jack/Grand Hustle/Epic Records. The set earned 537,000 equivalent album units in the week ending August 9th, according to Nielsen Music. Based on that total, 270,000 were driven by traditional album sales giving Travis Scott the second-biggest sales week of 2018. Most noteworthy, the Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the United States. Billboard uses a multi-metric consumption as measured in equivalent album units. These units are comprised of album sales, track equivalent albums, and streaming equivalent albums. Of Astroworld’s total units, 261,000 are streaming equivalent albums sold. Additionally, 6,000 are track equivalent albums, and the remaining 270,000 are traditional album sales.
Travis Scott Merchandise Bundles Helped Land Milestone
Travis Scott and his amusement park-themed album is only second to Drake’s Scorpion when it comes to first week numbers. However, due to the second-largest sales week of the year for an album, Travis Scott is doing pretty well. The album’s sales were supported by an array of Astroworld-inspired merchandise/album bundles sold on his website. Additionally, Astroworld gives Scott his biggest sales week ever. This album has debuted well beyond his previous high when Rodeo dropped in 2015 with 70,000 sold.
Also, worth noting, Astroworld enters with 261,000 streaming equivalent album units which translates to 349.43 million on-demand streams. That streaming figure is the fifth-biggest tally for an album. The only larger weeks were posted by the arrivals of Drake’s Scorpion (745.92 million) and Post Malone’s beerbongs & Bentleys (431.3 million). In addition to those debuts, Drake holds the three and four spots with Scorpion’s second week and the debut of Drake’s 2017 album, More Life.
