BTS Land Third Number 1 Album on Billboard 200 Chart
BTS have landed their third number 1 album in less than 12 months on the Billboard 200 chart. With Map of the Soul: Persona the K-POP boy band have found themselves on top of the list. Furthermore, the seven-track album, which was released on April 12th, debuts with 230,000 equivalent album units earned in the U.S. Additionally, according to Nielsen Music, of that sum, 196,000 were in album sales. This is a career-high week for the South Korean pop group. Most noteworthy, The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. The chart bases these rankings on a multi-metric consumption that is measured in equivalent album units. Especially relevant, units are made up from traditional album sales, track equivalent albums, and streaming equivalent albums. The new chart for this week, where BTS find themselves in the top spot will be posted online on April 23rd.
Of Persona’s first-week units, 196,000 were in album sales. 8,000 of these units were track equivalent and 26,000 were streaming equivalent. Furthermore, the streaming equivalent translates to 37.4 million on-demand audio streams for the set’s songs. Most noteworthy, some musicians take years to accumulate three number 1 albums. However, BTS has accomplished this feat in just under 11 months. The group started their run back in June of 2018 with their first number 1, Love Yourself: Tear. Continuing their run in September, the group scored their second number 1 with, Love Yourself: Answer.
The last musician to score three number 1s within a timeline such as this or shorter was Future, when he landed his first three number 1s. Most noteworthy, the Atlanta rapper was able to accomplish this in just six months and three weeks with DS2 in August 2015, “What a Time to Be Alive” in October 2015, and Evol in February 2016.
Perhaps the most noteworthy information is that BTS is the first group since the Beatles to earn three number 1s in less than a year.
