Karol G & Nicki Minaj Top Hot Latin Songs with ‘Tusa’
For the first time in the history of the chart, two lead female artists top the Hot Latin Songs chart with a song’s debut. Teaming up from the countries of Colombia and Trinidad & Tobago, Karol G and Nicki Minaj join forces with Tusa. This is their first collaboration and the song launches at the top of the Hot Latin Songs chart. This chart ranks the most popular Latin songs of the week. Furthermore, it blends data from airplay, streaming, and digital sales. Additionally, “Tusa” has become the first song to debut at number 1 in 2019. Additionally, the first song by a female act in a lead role to hit the top since 2016 when Shakira put out “Chantaje” featuring Maluma. Especially relevant, this is the first title by two women in a lead role to open on top of the chart since it was created in 1986.
In addition to Shakira, Karol G and Nicki Minaj, only two other songs with a woman as the lead role have debuted at number 1 on this chart. Rocio Durcal did it in September 1986 with “La Guirnalda” and Gloria Estefan did it with “Hotel Nacional” in January 2012. However, there have been two other songs with female acts in featured roles that hit the top, “Mi Verdad” by Mana featuring Shakira in Feb 2015. Most recently, “Taki Taki” by DJ Snake which featured Ozuna, Selena Gomez, and Cardi B did it in October 2018. “Tusa” is Nicki’s sixth entry on Hot Latin Songs and her second top 10. Previously, Minaj peaked at number 5 with “Krippy Kush” in 2017 with Farruko, Bad Bunny, Rvssian, and 21 Savage.
“Tusa” is Colombian slang for heartbreak. The track was released November 7th alongside the music video. Logging 9.5 million U.S. streams in its first week, the song is moving well. Most notably, the track starts on the all-genre chart at number 78. Something to keep an eye on for sure.
