Roddy Ricch Jumps to Number 1 with ‘The Box’ on Hot 100
Compton rapper Roddy Ricch has earned his first number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 after rising from number 3 with his song “The Box”. This is a great accomplishment for the artist, especially earning bragging rights of surpassing Justin Bieber and his new single “Yummy”. “The Box” was released on Bird Vision/Atlantic Records and is the 1,096th number 1 in the Hot 100’s 61-year history. Roddy Ricch wrote the track with the song’s producer, 30Roc. Most noteworthy, the 21-year-old Compton MC hits the top spot after its fifth week on the chart. Especially relevant, the song has scored its second week on top of the Streaming Songs chart after a 60% surge up to 68.2 million U.S. streams for the tracking week. These numbers are tracked and reported by Nielsen Music/MRC Data. However, it should be noted that the song does not yet have an official music video. This could spell trouble for the likes of Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez, and every other artist looking to top the chart once the official video is out.
The streaming sum for The Box is the second-highest for any song only trailing Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You” which brought in 72.2 million. However, Lil Nas X set the record with Old Town Road featuring Billy Ray Cyrus when he scored 143 million back in April 2019. “The Box” screams up the Digital Song Sales chart from 31 to 8, up 79% to 11,000 sold in the tracking week. Additionally, sporting a cool 196% increase with 10.9 million all-format radio airplay audience impressions. The single currently holds the top spot on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Hot Rap songs chart simultaneously for the second week. This song comes from Roddy Ricch’s debut studio album Please Excuse Me for Being Antisocial. Keep an eye on the charts to see how everything plays out moving forward.
