Is the King of Pop Coming for the Queen? Michael Becomes a Top 10 Biopic at the Global Box Office

The Michael biopic is continuing its massive theatrical run, crossing $430.3 million worldwide after just two weeks and officially landing among the 10 highest grossing biopics of all time.

Directed by Antoine Fuqua, the film centered on Michael Jackson has quickly outpaced expectations, fueled by strong international demand and consistent domestic turnout. In its second weekend alone, the film pulled in $54.5 million in the U.S., marking the biggest second weekend ever for a music biopic with only a modest drop from its debut.

Internationally, Michael added another $86.1 million across 82 markets, pushing its overseas total to $246.1 million. Combined with its domestic haul of $184.3 million, the film’s global momentum has already surpassed the pace of Bohemian Rhapsody at the same stage of release.

With its current trajectory, Michael is closing in on the lifetime gross of The Greatest Showman and could soon move even higher on the all time rankings. It now sits alongside top performing biopics such as Oppenheimer, The Passion of the Christ and American Sniper.

Industry projections suggest the film could cross $500 million globally in its third weekend and potentially finish between $800 million and $1 billion worldwide, placing it among the biggest biographical films ever released.

Notably, the film focuses on Jackson’s rise and career highs, concluding around the start of his Bad tour. It avoids addressing the later controversies surrounding the artist, a decision reportedly tied to legal constraints connected to past settlements.

With Michael still climbing rapidly, the question now is not whether it will break more records, but just how high it can go among the most successful biopics in box office history.
