Ed Sheeran Debuts on Top with No. 6 Collaborations Project
For the third time in his career, Ed Sheeran has scored the number 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart. However, this time he is aided by his star-filled No. 6 Collaborations Project album. The set opens up on top of the charts. Released on July 12th, via Atlantic Records, the collaboration album shows up with 173,000 equivalent album units earned in the U.S. for the week ending July 18th. Furthermore, this marks the largest week of the year for a pop album by a male artist. Especially relevant, of that starting total, 70,000 were in album sales.
It should be noted that The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the United States. These numbers are tallied from multi-metric consumption, measured in equivalent album units. For those interested, units are made up of traditional album sales, streaming equivalent albums, and track equivalent albums. Ed Sheeran is no stranger to the top as he previously led the chart with Divide in 2017 and Multiply in 2014.
True to the title, the No. 6 Collaborations Project has Ed on each track. However, he has partnered up with almost anybody you can think of across multiple genres. Some featured guests are Bruno Mars, Chris Stapleton, Camila Cabello, Travis Scott, Eminem, and 50 Cent. Furthermore, a song such as “Remember the Name”, featuring the Shady/Aftermath rappers, includes a reference to topping the Billboard charts. Eminem has nine number 1 Billboard 200 albums himself.
Analyzing the sum of No. 6 Collaborations Project’s units, we can see that 70,000 were in album sales. Furthermore, 10,000 were track equivalent albums and 93,000 in streaming equivalent albums. Regarding the streaming, this translates to over 121 million on-demand audio streams for the album’s songs during the tracking week. Additionally, the 70,000 in album sales should be nothing to scoff at. Ed Sheeran was able to do these numbers without the pairing of concert ticket/album sale redemption offers or any merchandise/album bundles. This has become a popular tactic to land the top spot. Should be interested to keep an eye on No. 6 Collaborations Project and its numbers through the summer. hairy woman
