Nineteen year old artist Khalid was only a senior in high school when he released his debut single “Location” onto his Soundcloud last August. Since then, the Texas native has watched as his track exploded, climbing into the Billboard Top 100 for a whopping 30 weeks, and was certified by the RIAA as double platinum. Within a year, he is signed to the major label RCA records. Quite the accomplishment before his 20th birthday.
The incredible momentum behind “Location” launched Khalid into multiple features, including the Logic track “1-800-273-8255” with Alessia Caira. This song peaked at 47 on the Billboard Top 100. He was also featured in “Electric” by Alina Baraz, and on the track “Rollin” from Calvin Harris’ new album Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1, currently sitting at #62 on the charts.
And of course to top it off, Khalid released his debut studio album “American Teen” on March 3rd. The album has spent 18 weeks inside Billboard’s top 20. It features songs, “Young Dumb & Broke”, “Lets go”, and “Hopeless” which highlight Khalid’s cool sound and crisp vocals. The album varies in sound, showing his versatility and talent. The album is a perfect testament to why Khalid’s career was able to explode in the way it did.
Khalid’s whirlwind experience over the last year and a half would be impossible for anyone to understand, but for Khalid perhaps it is normal. The young artist has grown accustom to constant change, as his family constantly relocated throughout his childhood. Khalid was born into a military family, and his family relocated throughout the country each time his mother (a member of the US Army) was reassigned. Despite this stress, Khalid has always looked up to his mother. As a vocal artist herself, his mother was forced to sacrifice her musical career in order to take care of Khalid.
In the interview linked (courtesy of Beats-1) Khalid shows off his positive mentality, his musical inspiration, and his thoughts on the insane last year of his life.
