Make More Money with Your Music

The great thing about being a musician in this day and age isn’t necessarily the music. While it’s possible to sum this article up simply by saying, ‘technology’. There may be many musicians who don’t take know how to take advantage of all the opportunities technology presents in 2017. Let’s take a dive beyond the digital music distribution and get a bit creative, that’s what being an artist is about, isn’t it?

Live Broadcasting

It feels like every social network has their own live streaming feature now and that’s a great thing. Whether you’re a vocalist, musician, MC, or producer, it would be wise to use live broadcasting to your benefit. People like to feel like they are a part of something. A simple way to go about this could be broadcasting live on Facebook with a ‘tip’ link. Maybe do some covers or live versions of your songs. Maybe even new content, it’s entirely up to you and your audience. Engage and interact with your fans and give them the opportunity to feel as if they are a part of the creative process.

Outside of the big social networks there are other companies geared more towards this concept. Most notably, Twitch. Most people would think of Twitch as a gaming platform, however there is still an audience for musicians and artists. Another popular service is YouNow, formally BlogTV. YouNow allows you to have a tip jar, however, you’re limited to 43% of the earnings but hey, that’s still something. Last but certainly not least, Periscope. Periscope is similar in concept to the other recommendations but allows you to keep 97% of your earnings (via PayPal). Piggy backing off of your social networking accounts and sharing your links with your followers will get you the best results.

College Tour

Another great way to connect with fans that may buy your music is simply to get out there and perform for them. Finding gigs may not be the easiest task, thankfully for the National Association for Campus Activities it becomes a bit simpler. Registering with NACA, you’re able to find regional conferences and showcase your music. NACA can also help with touring as well. What better way to find potentially new and enthusiastic fans.

In a previous article we talked about Bandcamp and their new app. Pairing Bandcamp with your new-found college audience is a perfect way to sell your merchandise. In person and obviously through the app, thus generating more money for you and your brand.

Don’t Hold Back

It isn’t always the easiest thing to put yourself in front of others, especially as an artist. In general, art is subject to opinion and other people’s opinions can bum you out if they aren’t favorable to yours. However, in the grand scheme of things, everybody has their own opinion – so what might be for one person might not be for another. Put yourself out there, live your dream, and as a bonus, make money while you do it.
