Michael Jackson Estate Wins Final Ruling to Proceed with $600 Million Sale to Sony Music

In a significant legal victory, Michael Jackson’s estate has been granted the green light to proceed with a $600 million sale of the late singer’s catalog to Sony Music. This comes after the California appeals court issued a final ruling on Wednesday, rejecting objections from Jackson’s mother, Katherine Jackson, who had aimed to block the deal.

The decision solidifies a previous tentative ruling made last month against Katherine Jackson. The court confirmed that the estate’s executors, John Branca and John McClain, did not violate Michael Jackson’s will when they negotiated the massive deal with Sony. The court emphasized that the will provided the executors with broad powers of sale, including the right to sell estate assets such as Jackson’s catalog.

“The will gave the executors broad powers of sale, with no exception for the specific assets at issue in this case,” the court stated. This reaffirmed that it was Michael Jackson’s intent to allow his executors to manage and sell estate assets as they deemed necessary.

Katherine Jackson’s legal team had argued that the sale violated Michael’s wishes and that the catalog would likely increase in value if retained. However, the court ruled that Katherine had forfeited her arguments by failing to present them before a lower probate court. This leaves her with limited options, though she could still appeal the ruling to the California Supreme Court.

The sale agreement between Jackson’s estate and Sony Music was reported earlier this year. It will see Sony purchase half of the singer’s publishing and recorded masters catalog for over $600 million. The transaction needed approval from a Los Angeles probate court, where Katherine Jackson filed her objections.

Despite the ongoing legal wrangling, Michael Jackson’s estate remains confident in the deal, asserting that it is in the best financial interest of the estate. The court’s ruling highlights that the sale does not diminish the estate’s value but instead provides a significant monetary return that benefits Jackson’s heirs.

While the legal battle has exposed rifts among Jackson’s family, the estate is moving forward with the deal, marking a pivotal moment in the management of the King of Pop’s legacy.
