Mixcloud New Low-Price Subscription Model Has Launched
Mixcloud is the U.K.-based music streaming platform that has long been recognized as a rival to SoundCloud. Most noteworthy, the platform has launched its new subscription offering, significantly undercutting rivals in the process. The new service is titled “Mixcloud Select” and subscriptions begin at $2.99 a month. Additionally, users who pay for this service will receive enhanced ad-free access, offline listening, and the ability to view full track listing up front. Unlike Spotify, other services such as Apple, and Amazon Prime, however, users don’t subscribe to Mixcloud’s full music offering but directly to individual curators and DJs. These playlist creators are free to set their own price in local currencies, beginning at the $2.99 price point. Additionally, they will earn a cut of the net revenue generated after royalties are paid to labels and publishers.
As Mixcloud launches this new service, 47 curator channels are available for subscription. Most noteworthy, dance DJs Afrojack, Nicole Moudaber, Lefto, and John Digweed are included in the bunch. Additionally, record labels Defected Records and Axtone Records are also included. Also on board are independent radio stations Brooklyn Radio, Red Light Radio, and Soho Radio. Homegrown Mixcloud stars like DJ Blighty and Low Light Mixes join the group.
Since Mixcloud launched in 2009, over 1.3 million curators have uploaded over 15 million on-demand radio shows, sets, and podcasts to the platform. Each upload typically lasts around 45 minutes. Until recently, the platform operated under non-interactive blanket licenses. However, it has now signed license deals with all majors such as Merlin and Warner/Chappel Music Publishing. Additionally, agreements are also in place with a number of international collecting societies and PROs. These include, SoundExchange, ASCAP, BMI, SESAC, SACEM, and U.K.-based PRS for Music.
Although the Select subscription tier is limited to only 47 curators to start, Mixcloud is asking its contributors to register their interest in the service. As they develop the service in the coming months, they really hope to create an exciting opportunity for themselves and the music industry itself. hairy woman
