RAYE, Rubén Blades and Industry Leaders Celebrated at Billboard’s 2026 Indie Power Players Event

The independent music community took center stage on June 9 as Billboard honored its 2026 Indie Power Players during a special event at New York City’s Cutting Room, recognizing the artists, executives and innovators helping shape the future of independent music.

Hosted by Billboard co-chief content officers Jason Lipshutz and Leila Cobo, the evening highlighted the growing influence of the independent sector, which continues to play an increasingly important role in the global music business.

“Many of the world’s biggest artists are signed to indie labels,” Cobo told attendees. “And, more importantly, what you do is fueling creativity and musicianship at a very essential and existential time for music.”

One of the night’s biggest honors went to Zena White, COO of Partisan Records, who received the Executive of the Year Award. The recognition was presented by Femi Koleoso of Ezra Collective.

In her acceptance speech, White reflected on the importance of supporting artists and creative expression.

“Art is not a luxury,” she said. “It’s necessary for us to connect with and understand one another, as well as ourselves. It can be a balm, an escape and in some cases, even a lifesaver.”

Legendary Panamanian singer-songwriter Rubén Blades received the Icon Artist Award, presented by Leila Cobo. During a heartfelt speech, Blades looked back on his journey from working in the mailroom of a New York record label to becoming one of Latin music’s most influential figures.

“My success also belongs to many other people’s talents,” Blades said while reflecting on the mentors and collaborators who helped shape his career.

Another major moment came when Richard Gottehrer received the Lifetime Achievement Award. Presented by Brad Navin, the honor celebrated Gottehrer’s pioneering work in independent music and his role in building The Orchard into one of the world’s leading music distribution companies.

“Music is a shared culture that breaks down barriers between people,” Gottehrer told the audience. “The Orchard stands for that and believes in it.”

Among the evening’s most inspiring moments was the presentation of the Indie Spirit Award to RAYE, whose independent career renaissance has become one of music’s most compelling success stories.

After years of navigating the major label system, RAYE found massive success on her own terms, earning Billboard Hot 100 hits and widespread critical acclaim. Her latest album, This Music May Contain Hope, marked a career milestone and further established her as one of pop music’s most distinctive voices.

Accepting the award, RAYE delivered a passionate speech encouraging artists to trust themselves and their creative instincts.

“I just want to encourage us to ignore the lies, ignore people that don’t need to have an opinion over what you are, who you can be and what you’re gonna do,” she said. “You get to decide that.”

The singer also praised Human Re Sources founder J Erving and her team for believing in her when others doubted her future.

As the independent music landscape continues to evolve, Billboard’s Indie Power Players event served as a reminder that some of the industry’s most influential voices, groundbreaking artists and innovative executives are thriving outside the traditional major label system. From celebrated veterans like Rubén Blades and Richard Gottehrer to modern trailblazers such as RAYE, the evening showcased the power of independence in shaping music’s future.
