Drake’s So Far Gone Makes Billboard 200 Debut 10 Years Later
It has been ten years since the initial release of Drake’s game-changing mixtape. However, despite the release date – So Far Gone is finally making its Billboard 200 chart debut. The mixtape was originally released for free in early 2009 but never commercially issued or distributed to streaming services. Most noteworthy, that changes now. On February 15th of this year, Drake made the mixtape available on streaming services. Furthermore, the mixtape may debut in the top five of the upcoming Billboard 200 chart with around 45,000 equivalent album units earned. The commercial and streaming debut is to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the mixtape’s original release and if it lands in the top 10, it will secure Aubrey’s 10th top 10 album.
The Billboard 200 chart is used to rank the most popular albums of the week based on multi-metric consumption. These multi-metrics include traditional album sales, track equivalent albums, and streaming equivalent albums. Back in 2009, an album needed to be released commercially to chart. So, while the full So Far Gone album never previously charted, the EP was released in late 2009 as Drake’s first commercially released album. All albums have been released via Young Money/Cash Money by way of Republic Records.
The So Far Gone EP combined five tracks from the full-length mixtape. This includes Drake’s first Billboard Hot 100 hit, Best I Ever Had. Furthermore, the song peaked at number 2 on the chart. Additionally, there were two new songs for the EP. Most noteworthy, the EP debuted and peaked at number 6 on the Billboard 200 which dated in early October 2009. However, perhaps most impressive, all eight of Drake’s releases following the EP through Scorpion in 2018, have debuted at number one.
