Taylor Swift is once again proving why she’s in a league of her own. Her newest album, The Life of a Showgirl, has officially crossed 3 million in traditional album sales (physical and digital combined) in the U.S., based on early numbers from Luminate. On release day alone (Oct. 3), the album sold an incredible 2.7 million copies, making it the second-biggest sales week in modern history, only behind Adele’s 25, which opened with 3.378 million back in 2015.

In total, Showgirl has earned over 3.2 million equivalent album units in the U.S. That number combines album sales, track sales, and streaming activity, though, notably, none of the songs from Showgirl are available to purchase individually on digital platforms. Even so, it still secured the second-largest week (in equivalent album units) for any album since the Billboard 200 chart adopted its current system in 2014.
Part of the album’s success comes from Swift’s clever mid-week drop of four new limited-edition CDs on her official store. Each version came with alternate covers, two exclusive bonus tracks, and joined a lineup of 23 previous physical editions (including vinyl, CD, and cassette) plus two digital versions. Swift also restocked her deluxe boxed set, complete with a cardigan and CD, which quickly sold out again.
Promotion-wise, Taylor’s been busy. She’s appeared on multiple radio shows and stopped by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon (Oct. 6) to talk about Showgirl. She also celebrated the release with Taylor Swift: The Official Release Party of a Showgirl, a film that topped the U.S. and Canadian box offices during its opening weekend (Oct. 3–5).
Streaming numbers are just as massive. In its first two days alone, the 12-track album generated over 300 million on-demand official streams in the U.S. The standout so far? “The Fate of Ophelia,” which pulled in more than 48 million streams, a number likely to soar after its official music video premiere on Oct. 5.
Billboard will release the final first-week stats (album units, sales, and streams) on Sunday, Oct. 12, with Showgirl expected to take a massive debut on the Billboard 200 chart (dated Oct. 18).

If The Life of a Showgirl does debut at No. 1, it’ll mark Swift’s 15th chart-topping album, pushing her past Drake and JAY-Z for the most No. 1 albums by a solo artist. That would place her second overall, right behind The Beatles, who hold the all-time record with 19.
From Fearless to The Tortured Poets Department, every single one of Taylor’s full-length studio and re-recorded albums since 2008 has debuted at No. 1 and Showgirl looks set to keep that streak alive.
